Case 5

Hunger - Opinion Editorial

Written by Konig, edited by Samantha

Imagine Los Angeles, New York, Dubai, or any other large booming metropolis around the world. Envision the bustling streets, the effective transport, and the various technological appliances being used. This is a pinnacle of our modern society, the epitome of all technology. This is where technology and means of communication are seen as convenient, instead of as the impediments they truly are. How is technology an impediment? Isn’t it designed to improve the rate of communication and efficiency? Where exactly are technological advances affecting people negatively?

In third world countries, people are suffering from malnutrition and poverty. This is because of the populations in all the bustling metropolises, but contrary to popular belief this is not because of limited resources. One of my fellow humanities classmates, Daniel Liu said in his presentation about overpopulation. The statistics he showed clearly demonstrate that our planet’s resources are not depleting at a rate fast enough to cause malnutrition and famine. If lack of resources isn’t the cause then what is? And how do large developed metropolises correlate with this issue?

Think back to when we envisioned that “model” metropolis, the people in it were ideally all carrying some form of technology, a device to communicate. With these devices and of couse, the interurban transportation that we have today, famine rarely is found. However, when transporting back to the undeveloped countries ''model'', all the means of communication and transportation are reduced at an unbelievable rates. Moreover, to cogitate that about one-third of the world lives in this condition conveys a great discomfort.

Infografic - Survey on KAS Food Waste

This graph represents kilograms of food wasted on KAS per day. On day 6, the KAS high school (test group) was exposed to posters about hunger all over school. As the graph shows, the effect was temporary. KAS wastes about 15kg of food everyday, enough food for about 50 people! (Elementary waste included)

Unfortunately, I lost 2 weeks worth of pictures so all I have now is single one.

Solution:

The solution to hunger around the world would take a lot of work, however, we can do little things that can change this huge problem. As one of the major root of famine is low income, I developed a theory that might help these people with low income.

People stop wasting food in KAS >>>
There are leftovers left in the caterers hands >>>
The caterers purchase less food >>>
Food prices drops because of less demand and oversupply >>>
Poor people are able to buy food.
